Welcome to Lee Canyon! Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned veteran, preparing correctly for our high-altitude environment is key to a fun, safe day on the mountain. Use this guide to ensure you have all the essential gear, proper layering, and key safety items packed for your trip.
Your Essential Winter Packing Checklist
Avoid getting cold or sunburnt on the mountain. Focus on the three “W’s”: Wicking, Warmth, and Waterproof.
Let’s talk outerwear…
Wicking (Base Layer):
- Purpose: Draws sweat away from the body to keep you dry.
- Recommended Item: Moisture wicking synthetic material or merino wool (avoid cotton!)
- Notes: Essential for preventing chills on the lift.
Warmth (Mid Layer):
- Purpose: Provides insulation and retains body heat.
- Recommended Item: Fleece jacket, wool sweater, or synthetic puffy vest.
- Notes: Easy to remove if you get too warm on the slopes.
Waterproof (Shell):
- Purpose: Protects against wind, snow, and moisture.
- Recommended Item: Insulated or non-insulated ski jacket and waterproof snow pants.
- Notes: Mandatory for staying dry and comfortable all day.
Safety & High-Altitude Must-Haves
Due to our location in the Nevada high desert, sun exposure and hydration are critical concerns, even when it’s cold.
Eye & Skin Protection
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+): The high elevation and reflection off the snow intensify UV exposure. Apply sunscreen frequently, especially to your nose, cheeks, and lips.
- Lip Balm: Use a balm with SPF to prevent chapping and burning.
- Eye Protection: Ski goggles are highly recommended for snow, wind, and sun protection. Sunglasses are a suitable backup for clear, calm days.
Hand & Head Gear
- Waterproof Gloves/Mittens: Essential for keeping hands warm and dry. Bring a second pair if you tend to get cold easily or on a heavy snow day.
- Helmet: Safety is our top priority. Helmets are highly recommended for all participants and are required for all lessons.
- Warm Hat/Beanie: Needed for warmth when taking breaks or walking around the base area.
