WINTER DRIVING TIPS
Nevada Chain Laws & Safe Winter Driving Guide
Before heading up to Lee Canyon, mastering winter driving and understanding Nevada’s chain requirements is mandatory.
Weather conditions change rapidly in the Spring Mountains. Use this quick guide to prepare your vehicle and your plan.
CURRENT ROAD STATUS (Check before you leave)
Road closures and chain requirements can be implemented suddenly. Do not rely only on weather forecasts. Check NV Roads for traffic conditions, weather conditions, closures, chain restrictions and more.
Nevada Chain and Traction Device Requirements
When Are Chains or 4WD Required?
Answer: Chain requirements are determined by Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and are posted on signs along the route. Conditions typically fall into three categories:
- R-1 Condition: Requires chains or snow tires on all vehicles.
- R-2 Condition: Requires chains on all vehicles except 4WD/AWD vehicles with snow tires.
- R-3 Condition: All vehicles must have chains (rarely implemented).
Vehicle Preparation Checklist
Ensure your vehicle is prepared for mountain travel.
- Fuel: Start your drive with a full tank of gas.
- Tires: Check tire pressure and tread depth. Ensure your 4WD/AWD system is engaged (if applicable).
- Wipers: Confirm windshield wipers and fluid are in good working order.
- Traction Devices: Pack proper traction devices (chains), even if you drive a 4WD/AWD vehicle, as conditions can change or regulations can be enforced suddenly.
Emergency Kit Essentials
- Extra warm layers, hats, and gloves.
- First-aid kit.
- Shovel and traction boards.
- Flares or reflective triangles.
- Food & Water: Non-perishable snacks and plenty of water.
- Communication: Fully charged cell phone and a backup portable charger.
Best Practices for Driving on Snow and Ice
- Go Slow: Reduce your speed significantly. No matter your vehicle type, speed is the primary hazard on ice.
- Increase Following Distance: Leave significantly more room (up to 10x) between your vehicle and the car in front of you.
- Brake Gently: Brake early, brake slowly, and never slam on the brakes. Gently pump non-ABS brakes.
- Avoid Cruise Control: Never use cruise control on slippery roads.
- Maintain Distance: Never pass a snowplow—they have low visibility and are actively clearing the road.
- Plan Your Trip: Leave plenty of time to reach your destination safely and without rushing.
